Ladies and Gentlemen, we have LIFT OFF!!!
by Carol Robinson-Todd, Chairperson

As I was driving west on Queen Street over the Victoria Bridge this afternoon, my eyes glanced to starboard, as they often do, to look at the focal point of our Grand Trunk Trail project - the Sarnia Bridge --and what to my wondering eyes do appear but railings on the Bridge!

The McLean-Taylor team had installed ten sections of railing on both sides of the Bridge at 2 p.m. DST. Wow! I watched for a while and delighted in the fact that two years of talk and planning had finally turned into something tangible.

The railings will probably be done by next Tuesday!  If you don't read this Website frequently, the installation of the railings might be completed by the time you read this-Next Tuesday!!  As in May the 12th - like VERY SOON. Oo-oo, this is getting exciting!

MAY 1998 UPDATE
by Mary Smith, Committee Member

It may appear that Grand Trunk Trail activities have slowed a bit since the big draw for the garden house a few weeks ago. That's certainly not the case.

Name plaques for planks, for instance, are still being sold - a tax deductible donation of $35 will get you recognition - your name right on the deck of the walkway over the Sarnia Bridge. And with repairs now being made to the concrete abutments at either end of the bridge and the sections of railing being fabricated, the day is getting closer and closer when the deck planks will be nailed in place and the bridge will be open for us all to use.

A plank with mom's name would make a perfect Mother's Day gift
If you are looking for an occasion to buy a plaque for the bridge, get one with your mother's name on it for
Mothers' Day, a lasting token to go along with the flowers and chocolates that you have probably already ordered. To make it convenient to buy a Mother's Day plaque, Grand Trunk Trail committee members will be on hand to sell them at Knechtel's Friday and Saturday morning, May 8 and 9, from 10 a.m. till noon and at Staffens, Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. till noon. Anyone purchasing a plaque for Mothers' Day will also get a Grand Trunk Trail gift card.

If you would like to buy a plaque at any other time, they can be purchased at the Town Hall, at the St. Marys Museum or at the new Grand Trunk Trail headquarters at the VIA Station.Grand Trunk Trail Sign at Via Rail Station Our fundraising thermometer is now located just outside the VIA station - you can check our progress by glancing over the railing when you are crossing the railway overpass on Queen Street East.

The Grand Trunk Trail Committee is very grateful to the Recreation and VIA ticket sales staff who have agreed to sell plaques and to answer questions about the project whenever a trail committee member cannot be present to do this.

Arthur Meighen students planting trees along Grand Trunk Trail

In the meantime, community interest in the whole trail project seems to be growing everyday. Committee members were very excited about all the work recently done by students from Holy Name of Mary and Arthur Meighen Schools to plant trees along the trail. Staffen's deciding to donate the proceeds from their Early Bird breakfast to the project was also a big boost.

This summer, St. Marys LACAC will be preparing documentation to designate the Sarnia Bridge as a historic structure. And word is, the bridge and its history will receive special recognition during the
Stonetown Heritage Festival the second weekend in July. Certainly the fundraising committee has some exciting plans for that event.

Make sure that you have your name plaque so that you too have played a part in this terrific community venture.
