Great Garden House Raffle
Draw for $2,500 Garden House/Shed on
Saturday, April 4, 1998.
We are entering the final
two months to purchase tickets on the The Garden House. The draw will take place on April
4/98.
Tickets ($3.00 per ticket or
4 for $10.00) are available at the Garden House (open Saturdays 10am-12 noon).
The GTT committee extends its thanks to Linda Strathdee of Stonetown Books
for her promotion on our behalf. She is donating $3 to the Trail for every copy of the
book, Early St. Marys by Curly Wilson and L.R. Pfaff. |
In my last article, I announced
the March 14th International Dinner which will be prepared by the
Bahai Community of St. Marys to benefit the GTT. The menu has been set and
here it is:
- Estaboli Polo (Turkish)
Casserole of Bismati rice, green beans and meat
- Persian Sweet Rice (Persian)
Rice dish of fluffy Bismati rice, grated carrot and sultanas
- Maghlobeh (Arabic)
Arabic rice and chicken
- Chicken Bahieh (Persian)
Roasted chicken pieces, marinated in onion and spices with a touch of garlic
- Rice and Tahdig (Persian)
Fragrant Bismati rice with thin roasted potato slices
- Khoresht Ghaimeh (Persian)
Delicate curry with steak, potato, split peas and black lemon
- Viande en croute (French Canadian)
Delicious meat roll in pastry
- Desserts: Chocolate Charlotte Russe,
Charlotte aux Bleuets, English Trifle
- Fresh Portuguese bread rolls, green
salads, juices, Persian tea, African tea and Arabic coffee
The evening at the
Friendship Centre will begin at 6 p.m. with a punch (a drink, not an action). The buffet
style dinner will be served at 6:30. We suggest being on time for the meal because there
are limited facilities for keeping the food hot for a prolonged period. After the meal, we
will be treated to a variety of entertainers in keeping with the International theme of
the evening. Tickets are available at the Garden House (open Saturdays 10am-12 noon).
There are only 50 tickets for sale.
The GTT
wants to extend thanks to the St. Marys Lions Club for its donation of
$15,000. Our fundraising total is around $82,000. (This means that our recent
"update" of the thermometer on the lawn of the Town Hall is no longer accurate.
At the rate of donation receipts, one of us is going to have to stay on the lawn with a
bucket of red paint at the ready to keep the mercury rising!)
We are beginning the tendering process for the railings that will
be on the Sarnia and Emily Street bridges. With a strong push to have that process
completed by early March, it shouldnt be long before the rumblings of activity are
seen on the Bridge. With your support, there will be a Trail to walk on this summer.
BACKGROUND
The Corporation of the Town
of St. Marys, Ontario, initiated an exciting community venture in the spring of 1996 when
it purchased 2000 metres of the abandoned Toronto to Sarnia Grand Trunk Railroad and the
historical stone trestle bridge which overlooks our beautiful "Stonetown".
A community committee of
citizens was formed to design the reconstruction of the line bed and bridge to form a
trail to be known as The Grand Trunk Trail. The planning can be seen on our home
page which also highlights our vision and mission statement. Thus far, over $80,000 have
been raised for the project. Work will begin this spring and it is expected that the
first stage of the trail, which will eventually include a Peace Garden and Nature Study
area, will open later this summer. The Grand Trunk Trail will be linked to the existing
Thames River Trail completed in 1996.
